The CrossFit world has a couple of saying we like to bandy about. One is “routine is the enemy”. We also like to talk about our fitness routines being constantly varied. Both of these things are incredibly important and a necessary component of reaching your fitness goals.
In fact Albert Einstein is accredited with saying that: “The definition of insanity is doing the same things and expecting different results”.
BUT, where routine becomes your friend is when you apply it to the consistency of attending the box. Coming once per week, then four times the next week, missing the next week and then twice the week after is not conducive to reaching your goals.
Those people that you admire at the box who are constantly reaching the next level and smashing their goals are the people that commit to attending a minimum of three hours per week. They do what is necessary in their schedules to clear those three hours every week for themselves. Given that there are 168 hours available every single week it really shouldn’t be that hard to find just 3 to improve your health!
Being consistent means not only that your physical health will improve with measurable things like heavier lifting, faster times and higher jumping but it improves your mental health as well. You start to feel more positive, you start to embrace the discomfort that comes during and after a workout because you know it’s doing you good. You start to appreciate that you are mentally tougher than you realised and other issues in your life become more manageable.
As the rainy, colder weather starts to set in it’s really easy to give in to the feelings of “I’ve worked so hard, I deserve a day off”, or “the weather isn’t great today, I’ll wait for a better day”. Once you start on this slippery slope it’s hard to stop sliding. This is where your CrossFit community shines. Contact one of your workout buddies and tell them your motivation is waning. Making an appointment to train with someone is often all it takes to get you out the door. Or better still, tell the whole community and a coach! Then you will have dozens of voices in your head motivating you to stick to your plan, to reach those goals so you can set some new ones and smash those too!
BY THE WAY….and this is super important…. Consistency works with clean eating and weight loss too. Do it 90% of the time and you can’t help but get results!
So, if you find yourself lacking the drive and motivation to move your body, book into the next available class immediately. All you have to do is drive here and walk in the door. The rest of the motivation is up to us. That’s what we are love to do. Check out how to start here or view our timetable and start planning how you can work those three hours into your week.
